One of the main differences between diatomite and conventional filters is that it is able to remove not only suspended matter from water, but also purifies water from harmful substances dissolved in it, as well as from fine particles.
Diatomite is an aluminosilicate with a skeletal structure that contains voids occupied by water molecules and large ions. Due to their free movement, ion exchange and reversible dehydration occur. In terms of the combination of useful properties, diatomite is in the lead, showing excellent sorption, molecular sieve, selective ion-exchange catalytic properties.
The diatomite particle size and open structure allow it to work effectively as a filter material in a variety of applications. The pores within and between the shells of diatoms are small enough to absorb bacteria, clay particles, and other suspended solids. Diatomite is used in the production of drinking water, in the purification of water in swimming pools, in brewing, winemaking, in chemical plants.
